Workshop Description

Treating clients with complicated grief is common for many therapists that specialize in work with trauma, yet it has unique components that require care to address effectively with EMDR therapy. In this training, we will look at the aspects of loss that increase the likelihood for complicated grief to develop, and how to most effectively treat it with EMDR. We will cover the art of pacing of the work, specific interweaves to promote closure and strategies to help facilitate the development of a healthy new narrative as the client incorporates the loss into their new assumptive world.

  1. Identify 3 theories of Grief and Mourning.
  2. Describe 3 ways the brain reacts to grief
  3. Define 3 specific models for processing grief that can be incorporated into EMDR Therapy.
  4. Describe 5 factors for History Taking related to grief
  5. Identify 3 unique resources in EMDR Preparation work with grief.
  6. Define 4 strategies unique to maintaining effective reprocessing of grief.

For 15 years, Elena Thomason, MA, LPC, has dedicated herself to college student support as a professor and counselor, nurturing specialties in grief, identity, eating disorders, mood issues, premarital counseling, and trauma. She envisions counseling as a journey through life's challenges, providing an authentic and caring space for clients to navigate rocky and foggy times. Embracing pain as essential for change, Elena's holistic approach considers all aspects of clients and situations. EMDR has become pivotal in her practice. Born in Mexico and raised in southern California, Elena settled in Colorado Springs two decades ago. Married for 16 years with three vibrant children, she finds grounding in both the ocean and the majestic mountains that surround her.

Tamra Hughes

MA, LPC, EMDRIA Certified Therapist, EMDRIA Approved Consultant and Trainer

Tamra Hughes, MA, LPC is an EMDR therapy trainer with extensive experience since 2013. She conducts EMDRIA Approved EMDR Basic Trainings and advanced sessions, focusing on attachment, relational EMDR approaches, and reprocessing strategies. With a rich background, she leads a practice catering to all age groups, adeptly addressing trauma, grief, anxiety, stress, and tumultuous relationships. Previously, Tamra specialized in high conflict divorce, studying attachment's impact on caregiver-child bonds and delving into the trauma of fractured relationships. Since her practice's inception in 2003, Tamra has passionately embraced EMDR therapy, finding it not only invaluable for trauma but also as a foundation for resilience, meaning-making, and effective clinical work. Her teaching style is personable and immersive, reflecting her enthusiasm for EMDR.

Requirements to obtain CE:  Watch entire webinar recording; complete course evaluation & posttest. 

Posttest: Obtain an 80% minimum score. You can retake the test as needed to achieve a qualifying score.

Evaluation: At the completion of the webinar a course evaluation will be available for completion.

Certificate award process:  A certificate of completion will be provided by EMDR of the Rockies. The certificate will be available for immediate download.
